Menopause Specialist in Manchester
If you are looking for a menopause specialist, Manchester is home to one of the few consultant-led gynaecology practices in the North West built around hormonal health. Dr Edmond Edi-Osagie is a Senior Consultant Gynaecologist whose field is reproductive medicine and endocrinology, the branch of medicine concerned with how hormones govern women’s health. The menopause sits squarely in that territory, and so do the years either side of it.

The menopause is a natural stage of life, not an illness. But natural does not mean easy, and it certainly does not mean you should put up with years of broken sleep, flushes, anxiety, joint aches or a mind that no longer feels like your own. Women should have full enjoyment of life and not be restricted on account of advancing years. Good specialist care exists, it is evidence based, and it can usually begin within days of your first appointment.

Perimenopause: When Symptoms Begin Before Periods Stop
Most women notice changes well before their final period. The perimenopause typically begins in the early to mid forties, sometimes earlier, and can last several years. Periods may become irregular, heavier or closer together. Sleep becomes fragile. Hot flushes and night sweats appear, along with mood changes, irritability, low energy and the frustrating fog that makes familiar words hard to find.
Because periods are still happening, many women are told they are too young for the menopause and sent away. As a perimenopause specialist service we take a different view: it is the pattern of symptoms that matters, not the calendar. And where heavy or erratic bleeding is part of the picture, we investigate it properly rather than assuming hormones explain everything.
HRT: An Honest Conversation, Not a Sales Pitch
Hormone replacement therapy is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, and for most women the benefits outweigh the risks. It is also not the right answer for everyone, and a responsible specialist will say so. What you can expect from us is a clear account of what HRT can and cannot do for you personally, based on your symptoms, your medical history and current national guidance rather than on whatever is being discussed online this month.
Where HRT is the right choice, we talk through the options open to you and agree a plan you understand, then review how you respond rather than leaving you on a repeat prescription indefinitely. Where it is not suitable, or simply not wanted, we discuss the alternatives honestly, from non-hormonal medication to targeted treatment of the symptoms that trouble you most.
When It May Not Be the Menopause
The menopause explains a great deal after 45. It does not explain everything, and one advantage of seeing a consultant gynaecologist rather than a menopause-only service is that nothing gets filed under hormones by default.
Bleeding after the menopause is never normal
Any bleeding twelve months or more after your last period needs prompt assessment. In most cases the cause turns out to be benign, but the small number of serious cases are exactly the ones where early diagnosis changes everything.
Assessment usually involves an ultrasound scan and, where indicated, a hysteroscopy, a short outpatient procedure that lets us examine the lining of the womb directly. We arrange these promptly, typically within days.
Later Years Gynaecology: Prolapse, Urinary Symptoms and Pelvic Health
Much of our work is with women whose quality of life is being quietly eroded by problems they have been told to expect at their age. Common is not the same as untreatable, and prompt intervention protects both independence and confidence.
Pelvic organ prolapse
A sensation of dragging, heaviness or a bulge. Pessaries, pelvic floor physiotherapy and local oestrogen resolve many cases without surgery.
Urinary symptoms
Leakage on coughing or exercise, or a sudden urgency you cannot ignore. Effective treatment exists and this is not something to accept.
Pelvic masses and pain
Persistent bloating, pressure or discomfort. Scanned and assessed properly, with keyhole surgery where an operation is needed.
What Your First Appointment Involves
Your first consultation is unhurried. We listen to what matters most to you, whether that is sleep, mood, intimacy, bleeding or simply an explanation, and we build the assessment around it.
- A full history of your symptoms, your periods and your general health.
- Examination and a pelvic ultrasound scan where these are needed, usually at the same visit.
- Blood tests only where they genuinely change the picture. Over 45 the diagnosis is usually made on symptoms alone.
- A plan you have agreed rather than one you have been handed, with a clear point of return if anything changes.
Why Women in Manchester and Cheshire Choose Dr Edi-Osagie
Dr Edmond Edi-Osagie (MB.BS, MRCOG, MD) is a Senior Consultant Gynaecologist at Manchester University Hospitals and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. His field is reproductive medicine and endocrinology, which means hormonal health is not a sideline to his practice but the centre of it, supported by the full diagnostic and surgical range of a consultant gynaecology service. You can read more about his background and the wider team on our team page.
That combination matters at this stage of life. The same consultant who advises you on the menopause can investigate unexpected bleeding, assess a prolapse and, where it is needed, operate. Nothing is referred onwards, repeated or lost between clinics, and you keep the same face throughout.
Practical Details
You do not need a GP letter. Self-referral is welcome, and appointments at our private menopause clinic are usually available within days rather than weeks. Consultations take place in Manchester city centre and at The Alexandra Hospital, Mill Lane, Cheadle, convenient for women across Manchester and Cheshire. Consultation and treatment fees are published openly on our costs page, and we work with all of the major private medical insurers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have reached the perimenopause?
If you are over 40 and noticing changes in your periods alongside symptoms such as flushes, disturbed sleep, mood changes or brain fog, the perimenopause is the most likely explanation. A consultation is the reliable way to confirm it and to rule out other causes.
Will I need blood tests to diagnose the menopause?
Usually not. Over the age of 45 the diagnosis is made on your symptoms and period pattern, in line with national guidance. Hormone levels fluctuate so much during the perimenopause that a single blood test can mislead. Testing is reserved for younger women or where the picture is unclear.
Is HRT safe?
For most women, yes, and for many the benefits go beyond symptom relief. The honest answer is that safety depends on your individual history, which is exactly what the consultation is for. We will give you a clear, personal assessment of benefit and risk rather than a blanket answer.
I have had bleeding since my periods stopped. How quickly can I be seen?
Quickly, and please do not wait. Bleeding after the menopause always needs assessment. We can usually see you within a few days and complete the scan and any further investigation promptly.
Can I refer myself, or do I need a GP letter?
You can refer yourself directly, with no GP letter needed. If you plan to use private medical insurance, some insurers ask for a GP referral before authorising treatment, so it is worth checking your policy before you book.
